View of Playland fire from Aurora parking lot, Aug. 20, 1953.

Aug. 20, 1953. Contrary to popular belief, neither Playland nor the Dipper burned down that fateful day in August 1953. The clouds of black smoke rose from the Mystery House, Old Mill, Restaurant and park office, all of which contributed tinder-box contents and tarred roofs to provide fuel for the blaze. The west corner of the Dipper caught some flames and had to be replaced. Photo courtesy of Nina Fraley.
