August 20, 1953. Fire Chief Frank Georgeadis of the Greenwood fire dpartment said sparks from weeds being burned by a park maintenance man set afire tar calking on the "tunnel of love." The park was empty at the time. Flames spread rapidly to the park office building and several concession buildings. The park's roller coaster was damaged and put out of operation for the season.
