Each spring, when the carousel was assembled, the horses' tails were always the last thing to go on. One year, before we could get the tails installed, a pair of swallows discovered that the hollow body of a wooden carousel horse makes a perfect nest. Over and over, the parent swallows would circle the moving Merry-Go-Round until they found "their" horse, and then they would dive into the rear of the horse as it moved up and down on its pole. For much of the summer, they had to leave the tail off that horse. Photo donated by Nina Fraley.
